Jesse Williams gave a speech at the BET awards that many are praising because it provides the all too familiar scape goat narrative that grievance cultures crave. It was full of inaccuracy and rarely had any truth to it. The breakdown is fairly contemptuous from me, so be warned.
Now, this award, this is not for me. This is for the real organizers all over the country. The activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers, the students that are realizing that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do. All right? It’s kind of basic mathematics. The more we learn about who we are and how we got here, the more we will mobilize.
You built the system that is dividing you and impoverishing you. You are at an event that divides people BLACK Entertainment Television awards. That is ridiculous. The Gabrielle Union’s of the world are ignorant and say that it is because they “are not equally represented” but the SAG and nominations/winners of awards match up nearly identically to population in the US (which it honestly shouldn’t due to the cultural stigma of the arts in the community). The more you learn about who you are and how you got there, the more you complain about injustices that every group on Earth has suffered and which you, personally, have never suffered.
Now, this is also in particular for the black women in particular who have spent their lifetimes dedicated to nurturing everyone before themselves. We can and will do better for you. Now, what we’ve been doing is looking at the data and we know that police somehow manage to deescalate, disarm and not kill white people every day. So what’s going to happen is we’re going to have equal rights and justice in our own country or we will restructure their function in ours.
Yes, black women do spend their lifetimes caring for everyone. This is due to the insane single motherhood rate among the community. If black men took care of their business, this would not be the case. Police actually kill white people at a higher rate than black people in similar situations (University of Washington). Black people also resist arrest more. Black people commit more crimes and die less than that of white people (Crime percentages and the percentages of deaths by cops). You already have equal rights (in fact, superior rights, because a white person making these factually BS claims on national TV would be blackballed) and you threaten to, I guess, rebel or create your own country? Feel free, our national test scores will go up by a couple points.
Yesterday would have been young Tamir Rice’s 14th birthday. So, I don’t want to hear any more about how far we’ve come when paid public servants can pull a drive-by on a 12-year-old playing alone in a park in broad daylight, killing him on television and then going home to make a sandwich.
Tell dumb kids to not point a identical replica of a gun at people. Tell your kids to obey police officers and not reach for guns (yes, it was a BB gun that looked exactly like a real gun, how could a cop know). I do not feel sorry for people who die in these situations, no matter the age. Put yourself in the police officers position who encounters life threatening situations on a frequent basis, as hard as that may be.
Tell Rakia Boyd how it’s so much better to live in 2012 than it is to live in 1612 or 1712, tell that to Eric Garner, tell that to Sandra Bland tell that to Dorian Hunt. Now the thing is though, all of us in here getting money, that alone isn’t gonna stop this. Alright? Now dedicating our lives to getting money just to give it right this back for someone’s brand on our body when we spent centuries praying with brands on our bodies, and now we pray to get paid for brands on our bodies. There has been no war that we have not fought and died on the frontlines of, there has been no job that we have not done, there is no tax they haven’t levied against us. But freedom is somehow always conditional here. “You’re free,” they keep telling us, “but she would’ve been alive if she hadn’t acted so … free.” Now freedom is always coming in the hereafter, but you know what though, the hereafter is a hustle. We want it now.
Rakia Boyd was innocent but the officer was justified in his actions, believing his life was on the line. It is regretful that the situation happened and that Boyd died, but officers have a right to protect themselves (much more of them would die if they did not have this vigilance, but that doesn’t matter to people like Jesse). If you believe a person just wants to kill random people and put their life at risk, then you are stupid, especially if you think they would choose black people as the target. How often do you hear of a white person killed by police? Almost never, even though it happens twice as often and is disproportionate to the amount of crimes committed by race. So if people were out to kill, wouldn’t they go with the one that causes the least amount of scrutiny (because it is cool to kill white people!)? Eric Garner was resisting arrest and was conducting an illegal activity. He said that he couldn’t breathe 13 times, which you wouldn’t be able to do if you couldn’t breathe. This never would have escalated if Garner did not resist arrest and get belligerent. Sandra Bland was pulled over for a routine traffic stop. He had every right to ask her to put out the cig (for fear of scent blocking of throwing it at the cops). He may have overreacted, but he was well within his rights. She owed a ton of money for unpaid fines and was going to miss her first few days of work at a new job. Her sister wouldn’t come to bail her out. The last thing she told her cell neighbor was “I can’t do this” after crying in her hands. She committed suicide and it all could have been avoided if she was just respectful. I couldn’t even find out who Dorian Hunt is. Bottom line is that you should obey police, be respectful, no sudden moves, and you should not resist arrest. Take responsibility for your dumb actions and stop shedding yourself of all responsibility. If you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. How often have you seen a cop randomly start beating someone who did all of these things? That is right, never.
So you want special treatment I guess? The only reason you have this platform is because you are free. Feel free to travel to any country in the world, since they are so much better. I mean Africa has some countries where white people can’t own land, feel free to go establish yourselves over there if you are treated so badly here. The fact is, you aren’t treated badly, you are treated above all other races in the country. Asians aren’t white and still succeed at higher levels than white people, I wonder why!? Could it be that they work harder and/or are smarter?
Let’s get something straight, just a little side note. The burden of the brutalized is not to comfort the bystander. That’s not our job. Stop with all that. If you have a critique for the resistance, for our resistance, then you better have an established record of critique of our oppression. If you have no interest in equal rights for black people, then do not make suggestions to those who do. Sit down.
If you are troubled by our blatant racism, don’t talk until you have proven you share some of the same sentiments. Oddly enough, the BLM movement comforts Muslims in America after a Muslim murders 49 people and injures 50 more, so that is a lie. “For our resistance…” Who is doing the dividing again? You were not oppressed any more than any other group of people, so stop playing at that. We have interested for the equal rights of everyone, and you only have interest in having greater rights. You cherry pick every story that goes for your narrative and ignore all the ones that don’t. Your oppression has a supply problem for your great demand. You actually wish to silence people who are not black, as this speech makes abundantly clear (you assume to know a person’s background at the moment they begin to speak in dissent to anything you say).
We’ve been floating this country on credit for centuries, yo. And we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil, black gold. Ghettoizing and demeaning our creations, then stealing them, gentrifying our genius, and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit. The thing is though, that just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real. Thank you.
The invention called “whiteness,” hilarious, honestly. He thinks he is actually uniting people. I’ll assume he is talking about current abuse, considering I’ve already disproved former abuse (and the former abuse was caused by Latinos, Africans, and Asians). To which I respond with the fact that white people (72.4% of pop) are being killed almost daily in this country by the murder of black people (13% of the population). Here is an excerpt:
[In 1999, according to U.S. Dept. of Justice statistics, there were about 197,679 black-on-white violent crimes compared to about 8,198 white-on-black violent crimes (single-offender victimizations involving completed, as opposed to mere threatened, violence)– more than 20 times as many—and even more remarkably there were about 20,003 black-on-white rapes or sexual assaults (single-offender victimizations), while the number of white-on-black rapes or sexual assaults was somewhere between between 0 and 33. Black-on-white rapes or sexual assaults were at least 600 times as common as the reverse.] Black people, as a whole, are the abusers, not the abused.
Now he is advancing to the common cultural appropriation gimmicks. He is speaking to a microphone that goes through speakers that white people invented, in a language that white people invent, in clothes that white people made, to a camera that white people invented, which is transmitted through a cable system which white people invented, and is watched on a TV that white people invented. Everyone there is famous because of the music and television industry that white people invented. He wants to talk about cultural appropriation?! Your culture consisted of rhythmic beats, that is nearly the only culture that black people came up with independently (North Africans were not black by any stretch of the imagination, so you can’t claim the inventions of the Egyptians). The culture you claim people are stealing from you is music/clothes that white people invented and you added a spice to it, so this is ridiculous to the highest order. When 46% of black youths live in poverty, and black people came from nothing to the country with nothing, how exactly are we stealing your dollars? The dollars that you make, Mr. Williams, are from an industry that was created by white ingenuity. Africans were here far longer than white people, so why is it that all of this “whiteness,” as you put it, is so much more prevalent than Africans?
Where are people demeaning your creations other than to say “Saying ass 32 times is not an acceptable for of music”? Who is stealing your creations and what creations are you talking about? Elvis Presley, who brought your style of music to the fore front? Would you rather your music be demonized to this day? Your creations consist of putting spins on other culture’s creations. Although white people do not care about this, you are the worst type of hypocrite to believe you have some special culture that is being “stolen.” He uses oxymorons, saying we ghetto-ize and demean, but then he says that we gentrify black creations, are you kidding me? Can you see how full of crap this guy is?
All culture grows from interaction with others, and it is a good thing. Implying that it isn’t a good thing is being ignorant of all history and what America stands for. America is called the “melting pot” for a reason. We all blend in together, except for most of your culture (since the 70s), to make one great culture. We are all Americans, if you can’t accept that, please leave our country… We will be better off without you.
